For the First Time In My Adult Life I am Ashamed of My Country
Freedom, Liberty, Personal Responsibility, and general Conservative principles suffered a crushing defeat tonight. The concept of limited government seems dead. In an election I will remember as the choice of the lesser of two evils, evil won.
I am tired. I am tired of choosing between bad and worse. I am tired of supporting a party that has lost its way. I am tired of Republicans whose motto is “we aren’t quite as bad as the alternative.” I am tired of liberals of both parties expanding entitlements, taking away liberties, raising my taxes, bankrupting the country, and calling me selfish for not wanting to bend over and take it. To paraphrase our new 1st Lady-elect, For the first time in my adult life I am ashamed of my country.
I am ashamed of my country because it has elected an unqualified clown. I am ashamed because 52% of the electorate has chosen an empty suit. I am ashamed of my party too. I am ashamed that starting in 2001, George Bush and the “Compassionate Conservatives” abandoned all Conservative principles in the name of political expediency. I am ashamed of new entitlements and rising deficits. I am ashamed of temporary tax cuts and class warfare.
John McCain is a good and honorable man, and he would have been far better than Obama, but he is no conservative. Neither is George W. Bush. McCain should never have been the standard bearer of the GOP. Republicans used to stand for small government, less interference, lower taxes. In a year when 75% of the country was dissatisfied with George Bush, McCain ran a completely ineffectual campaign, and yet still managed to gain approximately 46% of the vote. 46% of us including myself bit our tongues, swallowed our convictions, and supported McCain not because he supported our principles but because on balance he was better than the alternative. I am tired of carrying the water for Republicrats.
In McCain’s concession speech, he said “the failure is mine, not yours.” I disagree. McCain stayed true to his core principals. The failure belongs to all Conservative Republicans who squandered the opportunity gained in the 1994 Republican Revolution. The failure belongs to Conservatives who allowed yet another “moderate” candidate to win our primary. The failure belongs to a Republican Congress including John McCain who spent like drunken sailors and to George Bush who encouraged them in the name of compassion.
Tonight the fight for control of our country begins anew. The 2010 election begins now. I expect history to repeat itself. I expect Obama, Reid and Pelosi to follow the Clinton model in 1992 and overreach, thinking tonight gives them a clear left-wing mandate. I expect the Democrats to raise taxes and raise spending. I expect them to push for nationalized health care, the fairness doctrine, and the card check union system. I expect there will be a backlash in 2 years. As Conservatives, it is time to dust ourselves off, look to the principles of Reagan and Goldwater and Gingrich that served us so well in the past, and begin the fight anew.
If there is a lesson to be learned from this election, it’s that Republicans cannot and should not win by trying to move to the center. We must again become the party of small government. We must return to the concepts of fiscal responsibility and personal liberty. Our country is doomed to follow the path of other once-great societies if we do not.
It is time for a new Contract With America. Heck, we could dust off the old one and reuse most of it. The original Contract with America included:
- A Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution
- Welfare Reform
- Tax Relief
- Tort Reform
- Term Limits for Congress
I would extend these and add a few new items:
- Flat Tax or Fair Tax – It is time for a massive overhaul of how we collect taxes in this country. Our current “progressive” tax system is too complicated and lacks basic fairness. When 50% of the country pays less than 3% of the total tax bill, it is understandable why they would vote for a guy who promises to tax the other 50% even more. The Flat Tax would charge a single tax rate to all tax payers. It is fundamentally fair, in that everyone pays the same rate and “the rich” pay more than “the poor. Personally, I would prefer the Fair Tax which would eliminate all income taxes in favor of a national consumption (sales) tax.
- Eliminate Corporate Taxes – Corporations do not pay taxes, they merely collect them from employees, customers and shareholders. A zero corporate tax system combined with a flat or fair tax would make our economy the most competitive in the world for business and investment.
- Privatize Social Security – The Social Security system is completely broken, and will soon be bankrupt. It was never designed to be a permanent system. Most Americans under the age of 40 do not believe the system will be funded when they retire. It is time to implement a free-market privatized system that will allow individuals to save and invest in their own futures.
- Congressional Term Limits – The original limits proposed in the 1st Contract with America did not go far enough. Congress should be limited to no more than 3 terms in the House, 2 terms in the Senate, and no more than 12 years combined in either house. We need to return to the concept of a citizen legislature. The fact that has been in Congress for 26 years and Biden has been in Congress for 36 years is disgusting. Congress is not supposed to be a lifetime appointment.
- Line Item Veto Amendment – Presidents of both parties have asked for this for decades. We need to give the executive of this country the same power executives in the private sector have when dealing with budgets. This is the only way wasteful spending will every be eliminated.
- Constitutional Authority Amendment – Congress oversteps its Constitutional authority on a daily basis. We need a Constitutional amendment that requires all new laws enacted cite the section of the Constitution which grants Congress the authority to create the law. This should be common sense.
I’m sure there will be other points added to our new contract, but this is a good start. We have a lot of work ahead of us. We need to start today looking for a new generation of Conservative candidates, instead of looking to the same re-tread country club Republicans. We need to start raising money. We need to hold the remaining Republicans in the Senate responsible and urge them not to “reach across the aisle,” but to fight with their last breath to filibuster every stupid idea that is coming down the pike.
Congratulations to President-elect Obama. Enjoy your victory tonight, because tomorrow we begin the fight to prevent everything you stand for.

Ashamed of your country? How can you be ashamed of a day when a man, who was once prevented from voting based upon the color of his skin, is able to hold the highest seat in this Country?
Furthermore, we have a democratic process in this Country which permits the civil election of its officials. How many other countries can claim to have such a process that has served them so reliably and peacefully for over two centuries?
Stop being so cynical and grow up. I am not suggesting you agree with everything our leaders say or do. Just appreciate what we have in this Country. If only everyone in this world could be so fortunate.

I never considered Obama’s race relevant. If you voted for Obama because he is black, then you are the racist. Is it good that a black man can win the Presidency? Sure. I would happily support a leader of any race who reflects my values. I’d support conservatives like Michael Steele or Bobby Jindal. Obama is an empty suit and a socialist.

This is very good article and I believe that the people calling you racist because you did not vote for Obama are racist in themselves, because voting for someone because they are black is extremely racist. If you take time to read the article, you notice that the points made support the workers of America, not the freeloaders. America stands for hard work and as the author said, personal responsibility, and soon the personally responsible will be responsible for illegal immigrants and people who live off welfare. Well written article and anybody who gets the idea of racism from it is obviously not reading thoroughly.

Thank you for a very good read. I became a US citizen on July 25th, 2008. After the result was in, I wept! I am saddened for my new country. I didn’t vote for Obama not because I’m a racist (how can I now, a yellow voting for a white?). But like you said, BO is an unqualified clown. McCain doesn’t stand for everything I believe in but he is definitely far better than BO. Sad day for the nation really, if you ask me.

Not sure if I agree with ashamed. Too many people were fooled by BO… searching for an improvement in America. Both President and Congress are failing to deliver improvement. The crude comments demonstrate the failures of this election. What I cannot understand is why America is so interested in what other countries think. They appear to be waiting for our tax money to be handed to them. Why our constitutional rights are being undermined as if the Constitution is some flawed document.
Not ashamed…concerned that this election defines the end of America. America will now blend into all the other countries run by thugs/terrorists – dictators. No enlightened government in sight.

As a person who has stood for and helped people of all colors (being a nurse I know we are all the same color inside) to have a voice and a better life, I too am very sad for all of the Black people who did not support a half black person for President, but instead voted for a person who promised them free stuff. He had to buy their vote with the promise of money! This is worse for them than us. They think that this is a victory when it is just more of the same. Every white Democrate from FDR to Kerry promised blacks handouts. Obama just offered more. How is that helping people? How is that a victory? Black people like Alan Keyes, a black man who was the first one to run for president although the press pretended like he was not running, and a person that I worked hard to elect even against my own party and race, know that the only true help is when we help ourselves. I feel very sad for all of the Black people who supported Obama because what they really want is a handout. This is so sad! He out spent McCain 6 to 1 in some states. Buying votes never makes a good elected offical. When he cannot deliver on all of his promises to give handouts will all of the Blacks feel so intitled to that money that there will be even more crime in our nation?
Mark my words, as soon as Obama is sworn in crime will increase drastically. Just look at what hateful language Thugg Life uses and for what, because in a FREE country a person expressed an opinion? So very sad!

Wow, Thug life, that is sad. If that is all you have to say about the democracy we live in, WOW. Nice mouth by the way. I wish they would send people like you to other countries. God forbid our troops who are fighting in Iraq are protecting the likes of you! This race was not black verses white, besides Obama is really only half black, and he bounced all over the world. I am not saying it is not a historic election, it is, but I belive a lot of people voted based on race and emotion, NOT on who will run the country the best. Just be sure a year from now to post your thoughts when Obama comes to collect your liberties, your guns (oh little thug you), and then taxes you like nobodies business.
I am not ashamed of my country, it makes me want to fight more than ever. It makes me go back to study my constitution and to know my rights and to be educated so that I can fight back. It should make a lot of people want to go back to that and be knowledgeable so that when our guarenteed rights and liberties are trying to be taken away, I can take a stand. He says every issue that needs to be changed needs to be made with every Americans help… We shall see about that. I do hope that he does something for the country, and as the new president of our great United States, I will pray for him and his decisions. We need to turn our country back to God, or we will be in trouble. We need Gods good graces back on us in order to change our current issues. Pray for the next couple years, God help us.
Watching interviews every single person made it a race issue, not who will take the country back to greatness and cap the wasteful spending, change moral issues, and give back to the American people. Just be ready to fight for your liberties in our very liberal day and age.

Excellent article but I take issue with the point of saving this country in two years. This is not the election of a moderate opportunist like Bill Clinton. We don’t want to give him a Republican revolution just to have conservatives save his hide while allowing him to take credit for things like Clinton did. Let’s wait and see how badly they’re going to mess it up. We’re in the middle of two wars with more coming. To the informed this appears dire but it’s not the end. We can win the battle for freedom in four years if things are relatively kept in check. But, when the Constitution stands no more, let fear strike the hearts of the oppressors as we rise to reclaim what our founders intended.

Excellent article! You said everything I have been thinking since last night. McCain was not ever my THIRD choice, and I, too, supported him because of the alternative.
I am not ashamed of my country, I am ashamed of the “Americans” who put this very dangerous man in the White House, along with the world’s dumbest man, Biden.
The promise of “free everything” is a big draw to some folks, and BHo’s election bears this out. These folks don’t realize that the promise of free stuff comes with a price – their very freedom.
So, in preparation for what’s to come, today I am making the following choices:
1. Cancel my newspaper subscription – they supported BHO so they don’t need my money.
2. Stop ALL financial donations except to my church. No more donations to Good Will, etc., everything gets sold via yard sales.
3. Stock up on non-perishable food stuffs, sugar, and flour.
4. Hold on to our older RV, we may need it to live in some day.
5. Have the hubby buy more ammo.
Finally, I want to warn everyone who is not stuck, eh, does not live in Washington or Oregon – about the “Death With Dignity” laws in these two states. “Death With Dignity” laws are aimed at weeding out the elderly and sick, of which my husband and I are. There was much out of state money poured into Washington to pass this law, and it did pass last night. They will be coming to your state, count on it. Marshall your forces NOW. It is my belief that this law will eventually evolve into compulsary euthansia.
Thanks again for a great, heartflet article!

Wonderful read! It is a shame that our country is slowly leaning towards Marxist principles. All one needs to do is read the 10 Pillars of Communism and see how we have trampled on our Constitution. Here are a few examples:
1. Abolition of private property and the application of all rent to public purpose.
The 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution (1868), and various zoning, school & property taxes. Also the Bureau of Land Management.
2. A heavy progressive or graduated income tax.
Misapplication of the 16th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, 1913, The Social Security Act of 1936.; Joint House Resolution 192 of 1933; and various State “income” taxes. We call it “paying your fair share”.
4. Confiscation of the property of all emigrants and rebels.
We call in government seizures, tax liens, Public “law” 99-570 (1986); Executive order 11490, sections 1205, 2002 which gives private land to the Department of Urban Development; the imprisonment of “terrorists” and those who speak out or write against the “government” (1997 Crime/Terrorist Bill); or the IRS confiscation of property without due process.
5. Centralization of credit in the hands of the State, by means of a national bank with state capital and an exclusive monopoly.
We call it the Federal Reserve which is a credit/debt system nationally organized by the Federal Reserve act of 1913. All local banks are members of the Fed system, and are regulated by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC).
I, like you, am ashamed of what our party (republicans) represent. However, I voted for McCain because he is a moderate compared to Obama. I believe that Obama will take socialism even further than it already is — to the point where liberty and freedom will be a pipe dream. To tell you the truth, I wanted to vote for Chuck Baldwin, but I didn’t because I believed that it would be a wasted vote. Next time, I will vote with my conscious.
It seems that accountability and hard work are being replaced with entitlements, and majority of American people are to stupid to notice that their liberties and freedoms are slowly taken away by submitting to these liberal principles.

Don’t you chowder heads get it. The country has rejected Republican ideologues. The culture wars whatever that meant was a ruse to elect a cohort of individuals who would shower some of America’s wealthiest citizens with even more tax breaks. And as for this we’re all for smaller government or lets keep the government out of the private sector we can now see with alarming clarity the folly of this doctrine. $800 billion dollar bailout for Wall Street. This foolish ideology of the markets being self-correcting is poppycock. And to call oneself an American patriot when we are fighting 2 wars and refuse to any personal sacrifice like a tax hike to help pay for these wars is morally reprehensible. Hey, who cares right we’ll just saddle future generations with this ballooning debt. Very socially responsible ideas that can only emanate from a party preaching Moral Values.

It’s stupid to suggest that someone is a racist for not voting for Obama. It’s very well possible that someone really believes that McCain would be a better president, and that’s a very valid reason not to vote for Obama.
On the other hand, it’s ignorant not to vote for Obama because he’d be a socialist. I get the impression many conservative Americans don’t have a clue what socialism is or what Obama stands for. In the political spectrum of many northern European countries, Obama would be well on the right wing. American politics are extremely conservative and right wing compared to European politics. American politics can move quite a bit to the left without losing any individual freedom. You might even gain a few. The Bush administration wasn’t exactly a friend of individual freedoms.
But there’s a lot more ignorance in this article. Do you really think 50% of Americans make more than $250,000 a year? I have no idea if Obama’s tax cuts will really benefit 95% of the working population, and I have no idea how large America’s working population is, but I think a lot of working Americans could use a break about now.
I won’t even get into the ravings of the people who think Obama is a muslim. Please inform yourself a tiny bit before you spout your ignorance all over the internet.

Honestly, I’m pretty happy that Obama was elected. I’m sure that some people voted for him because he is black, and I’m sure some people didn’t vote for him for exactly the same reason. But we have to realize, that not every single person in the country is racist. A lot of the voters looked at the two candidates and voted fairly. They chose Obama because they like his values, his ideas, and his campaign. We voted him to run our country and as a hope to make everything better after the disaster that was Bush. And maybe people voted for him because they didn’t want another Bush. Who cares? It happened because it happened. And if everything goes to hell, then go ahead and say I told you so, but at least give the a chance before you start rallying the troops to bring him down.
